EEMBC Update - April 2010

Hypervisor Performance Analysis

Wind River’s Mark Hermeling, will be presenting “Analyzing the Performance Impact of Virtualization on Multicore Processors” at the upcoming Multicore Expo. He’ll be explaining the general concepts of hypervisor performance along with an overview of EEMBC’s current development of HyperBenchTM.

Attend Processor Performance Analysis Tutorial

EEMBC's Shay Gal-On will join David Kleidermacher (Chief Technology Officer, Green Hills Software) in presenting the tutorial "How to Choose a Multicore Processor for Embedded Networking Devices" at the Embedded Systems Conference and Multicore Expo. The tutorial will take place Monday (April 26, 2010) 1:00pm - 5:00pm.

A new EEMBC work group, chaired by Brian Jeff of ARM and Ron Olson of IBM, will define and develop a new benchmark suite to allow users to evaluate floating-point hardware performance. Examples of the real-world applications that the forthcoming FP suite will likely address include DSP filtering, audio and video encoding, and PID motor control. The benchmarks will also measure the performance delta between single (32-bit) and double (64-bit) precision.

Join this FP working group to further define and elaborate the new FP benchmark suite. Participation is open to all EEMBC subcommittee and Board of Directors members. EEMBC is also seeking contributions of benchmark kernels from the embedded industry at large. For further information, please contact Markus Levy, EEMBC president.

License Industry-Standard TCP-IP Performance and Conformance Tests

Under the chairmanship of Cavium Networks’ CTO & corporate vice president of software, Muhammad Raghib Hussain, EEMBC has released ETCP, a system-level test suite, which evaluates an embedded system's performance and conformance as a TCP/IP server. This benchmark suite relies on a specially assembled set of components from Ixia’s Automated Network Validation Library (IxANVL) and IxLoad. This benchmark test will benefit equipment OEMs who need to evaluate and compare the capability of processors that incorporate Ethernet interfaces.

At the recent Ethernet Technology Summit EEMBC demonstrated the ETCP’s functionality running on two of our member’s platforms. Representing the microcontroller world, we demonstrated the TCP/IP performance of STMicro’s STM32F107 utilizing Micrium’s µC/TCP-IP; representing the high-end network processor world, we demonstrated similar testing on Cavium Network’s Octeon 5860 development board.

ETCP is available for benchmarking certification for EEMBC’s members. This suite can also be licensed from Ixia by members and non-members to prepare for certification. EEMBC TCP benchmark can be offered free to any non-member with proof of ownership of the required IXIA equipment. The EEMBC Technology Center offers official certifications for prices starting at $6000 for platforms supporting 1-48 ports of 1 Gigabyte Ethernet (1GbE), or 9-16 ports of 10GbE.

In Israel at the Embedded Systems Design Conference, EEMBC’s director of technology, Shay Gal-On, will present “Performance Analysis for Multicore Platforms” on June 6, 2010.

EEMBC is exhibiting at the Linley Tech Spring Conference, May 18-19, 2010, DoubleTree Hotel in San Jose, CA. The program also includes talks and panel discussions covering such topics as 10GbE switching & backplanes, data-Center Bridging (DCB) and 40G Ethernet, network security, and application switching.

More than 1500 devoted users have downloaded the CoreMark benchmark, with 105 scores posted to the website. During the prior month, users have posted CoreMark scores for:
